About

La Belle Helene.jpg

Dallas-based mezzo-soprano Alexis Elza is a regular performer with The Dallas Opera, where she serves as a teaching artist through the company’s Education and Outreach program as well as a chorister in the mainstage productions. Following her 2026 appearance in the chorus of Don Carlo, her 2026–2027 season includes Barcarolle in John Davies’ touring production of The Bremen Town Musicians, an Aerial Acrobat in Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen, and appearances in the choruses of Puccini’s Turandot and Wagner’s Lohengrin.

In January 2027, Alexis will make her Opera Arlington debut as the Sorceress in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. She will then make her Amelia Island Opera debut in May, appearing as Kätchen and covering Charlotte in Massenet’s Werther.

Across all her engagements, she brings a richly colored mezzo, vivid theatrical instincts, and a commitment to making every story immediate and human.

That commitment to storytelling began long before opera entered the picture. Born in California and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, Alexis discovered the stage at the age of eight through Louisville’s vibrant community theatre scene. She spent her childhood singing, acting, and learning how to inhabit a character from the inside out—an early foundation in musical theatre that shaped the engaging and expressive performer she would become.

Alexis attended Louisville’s Youth Performing Arts School as a vocal performance major, where she was introduced to classical singing while continuing to pursue musical theatre. The combination proved formative: her theatrical instincts gave her a natural command of character and movement, while her operatic training expanded the range, color, and expressive possibilities of her voice. She began her professional operatic career while still a teenager, joining Kentucky Opera for its 2011–2012 season. There, she appeared in the chorus of Carmen and was featured as a Grisette in The Merry Widow.

She went on to earn her Bachelor of Music from Baldwin Wallace Conservatory and her Master of Music from Northwestern University. Throughout her training, Alexis pursued language study, spending multiple summers abroad strengthening her French and German through study and immersion in France, Germany, and Austria. Following graduate school, she spent an additional season living and studying in Salzburg.

Since then, Alexis has performed nationally and internationally in repertoire ranging from operetta and grand opera to intimate contemporary works. Her international appearances include a solo debut during the opening ceremonies at the Peace Palace in The Hague. Favorite roles include Hélène in Offenbach’s La Belle Hélène, Carmen in La Tragédie de Carmen, Elle in Poulenc’s La Voix Humaine, Elvira in Mozart's Don Giovanni, Serpetta in La Finta Giardiniera, as well as contemporary roles such as Ruth in Later the Same Evening and Day in Jonathan Dove's The Enchanted Pig.

Alongside her work as a performer, Alexis is a dedicated educator and music director. She is the founder of a thriving private voice studio whose students have earned numerous awards, competition placements, and regional and national recognition. As a teacher, she is passionate about helping singers develop sustainable technique without sacrificing individuality, theatricality, or joy.

Her recent and upcoming music direction credits include Bonnie & Clyde and White Christmas with Rockwall Community Playhouse and West Side Story with Rockwall Summer Musicals.

Whether she is performing, teaching, or leading a music rehearsal, Alexis approaches every project with the same unwavering commitment: to serve the music by telling the story.
